Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve: A National Model for Environmental Conservation in Qatar

7 Oct 2025

Located in northwest Qatar, Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve is one of the country’s most important protected natural areas, covering 1,154 square kilometers, which is nearly 10% of Qatar’s land area.

Established in 2005 and recognized by UNESCO in 2007 under the “Man and the Biosphere” program, it is Qatar’s only internationally designated biosphere reserve.

The reserve features diverse landscapes from rocky plains and salt flats to seasonal valleys and hills, forming a rich ecosystem that reflects Qatar’s natural heritage.
It hosts over 85 plant species, including acacia, sidr, and ghaf trees, as well as medicinal and food plants, making it a key symbol of Qatar’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
